Austin uses his air-gapped servers to pull California newspaper archives — faxed obituaries and police blotters from Lodi. The truth emerges: Portia von Stubben-Davis was born Aubrey Stanton. Conrad Davis was born Evan Graham. Half-siblings. They fled a severely abusive home together and reinvented themselves from scratch on the other side of the country.
FINDING: The murder was fratricide. Conrad killed his own sister.

Austin and Sloane pull encrypted executive summaries from AXiom's servers and trace Reid Trintell's money laundering apparatus. The flow: Roman Tate's Potomac Land Trust → AXiom Partners → Aubrey Stanton's shell company VDL Systems → 4Horsemen Solutions blind trust → Cayman Islands brokerage. Conrad uses SSH tunneling from CIT's supercluster to short the market against the companies paying into the circuit.

Exhausted, Sloane slides to the floor beside Maxxwell on the wool rug. She slips into a trance-like state — the Silver River — and taps into the dog's ancestral memory. She decodes the biological scents Maxxwell collected at Portia's funeral: Conrad and Portia shared the same blood, the same origin. But Conrad's bond to Charlotte overrode that. He deleted his sister as a redundant node. The equation surfaces: Sibling Bond = Shared DNA / time.
FINDING: Conrad Davis and Portia von Stubben-Davis were brother and sister. Maxxwell knew at the graveside.

The Heist Preparation
Mr. Smith arrives at the bunker with government coveralls and pocket litter — the props needed to pass as a Y2K remediation team. Austin uses his server rack to plan and execute the Smurf attack: a massive ping flood designed to crash CIT's network, trigger the HVAC failure, and vent steam over the patio as a thermal smokescreen. The heist has a thirty-minute window. They take it.

Tactical Fowl Thanksgiving
Austin rescues Maxxwell and Harley from the townhouse while Detective Miller pounds on the front door. He brings them to the bunker. Over a Thanksgiving dinner they call Tactical Fowl, Sloane and Austin exchange the painful histories they've never told anyone — Austin's ex-fiancée Callista, Sloane's ex-partner Eric and the Oracle theft. Two lone wolves learning how to be a pack. They share their first kiss.
TURNING POINT: Sloane stops being alone. It took the end of the world to get here.

New Year's Eve, 1999
Sloane and Austin spend New Year's Eve in the bunker watching the Times Square countdown while monitoring the power grid. The Y2K patch holds. The systems remain stable. The millennium rolls over quietly, the servers humming, the woodstove warm, the dogs asleep on the rug. Austin built this place to survive the end of the world. The world didn't end. Something better happened instead.
